Kenya faces being expelled from major athletics competitions following a delay in responding to a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) call that it is paying attention to cheating.
Kenya will have to prove to the doping agency its readiness to combat the menace which swept its sport recently.
“The biggest threat is the declaration of non-compliance and the possible consequences of that.
“The International Olympic Committee and other major event organisers, international federations, have the capacity to refuse entry for athletes from a country that has been declared non-compliant.
“But we have to wait to see how this plays out. The Kenyan government is working very hard to beat the timelines of WADA,” Christine Wambui Mugera, head of the regional anti-doping organisation in east Africa told the BBC.
Close to 40 of its athletes have in the last three years been banned for doping, raising serious questions over its preparedness to fight it even with the establishment of a national anti-doping agency.
